More about Aladzha Monastery

Aladzha Monastery is the most famous rock monastery on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast, build in XIII – XIV century. There are opinions that it is one of the first parts of the vast range of over 500 such monastery in North East Bulgaria.  Aladzha Monastery belongs to a huge group of natural caves.

Aladza rock cloister monastery consists of two level. On the first there is a church, a chain of monastic cells, a requiem church, kitchen and the crypt. On the second level there is a large natural rock niche, after which there is a small chapel which is reached by a wooden staircase downstairs. In Aladza Monastery are the best original work of medieval frescoes, due to the difficult access.
West of the monastery in the thick vegetation of the park “Golden Sands” are located another group of caves of named by Karel and Hermine Shkorpil as “Catacombs” – probably hermitage and monastic three levels. It is believed that they inhabited in the early Christian era (IV-VI century), the grounds for which are found fragments of pottery, coins and engraved crosses. Later, in XIII-XIV, “Catacombs” and “Aladza” monastery form a larger monastic complex. Ceased its active existence in the XVII – XVIII century.

The Kaliakra Cape

The Kaliakra Cape is one of the most beautiful places along the Bulgarian coast. Kaliakra was declared a protected area because of its beauty ( it is a unique combination of cliffs and crystal clear waters) and historical value. The area is famous for its dolphins, wide variety of seabirds that nest on the cliffs. The great wealth of flora and fauna in the area of the Kaliakra cape is mainly due to the ecologically clean area free from human activity. Occupying more than two kilometers of Black Sea Kaliakra is known as the longest nose in the Balkans.
