The relatively low altitude and favorable climate make the Bulgarian mountains attractive for hiking even in the winter. Sometimes winter mountains becomes an arena of hurricane winds, heavy snowfalls, avalanches and temperatures of around -25 / -30 degrees. At other times, however, we’ve seen a bright sun, warm and quiet days even on the highest peaks. Moreover, the winter panoramas are often far more memorable and breathtaking because of the transparency of the cold air.

The conditions typical for winter hikes require adequate clothing, sunscreen, sunglasses with a high protection and snowshoes, which can save us from monotonous and painful beating of the trail, which pleasure of winter hikes yield finished.

Transfer to “Shiligarnika” in Pirin
Hiking in direction “Vihren” hut
Visit to one of the oldest trees in Bulgaria – “Baykushevata mura” (1300 years)
After a short rest in the hut we’ll continue hiking around the “Banderishki” circus (the largest glacial cirque in Northern Pirin) and its frozen lakes, with panoramic views of the steep peaks, closing the circus from almost all sides. In good weather we’ll see the second highest peak in Bulgaria and the third on the Balkans – “Vihren”
Descend back to the staring point of the trek

One Day Winter Trekking to the Pirin mountain Alpine Traverses

Transfer to Bansko – Dobrinishte – “Gotse Delchev” hut
Chair lift to “Bezbog” hut (2240 meters), from where we’ll climb the “Bezbog” peak (2645 meters).
Continue along the ridge, turn west and reach the “Great Polezhan” peak (2851 meters).
There is the beginning of one of the landmark of Pirin mountain – the alpine traverses called “Strazhite” (the Guards)
In good weather conditions we’ll return to “Bezbog” hut through different route
Chair lift back to to “Gotse Delchev” hut

Two Days Winter Trekking in Piring for Advanced Mountaineers

Suitable only for advanced hikers with alpine experience in very good physical condition

Day 1 Duration: 2:00 hours / Denivelation: +240 m.
Transfer to the starting point of the trek – “Shiligarnika”
Hiking to “Vihren” hut
Exercise of alpine techniques
Overnight in “Vihren” hut
Day 2 Duration: 8:00 hours / Denivelation: + 1000 / -240 m.
Early departure (3:30). Get equipped for the alpine traverse before sunrise and begin climbing the “Vihren” peak (2914 m) through the “Dzhamdzhiev” edge with a rope. In clear weather we’ll be able to see the views to the “Musala” peak (the highest in the Balkans) and “Mytikas” peak, located in the Olympus mountain, Greece (second highest on the Balkan peninsula)
Descent in “Hvoynati” peak in direction to “Vihren” hut
Break in the hut and get down to the starting point of the winter trek
Transfer back to your hotel
