More About the Asen’s Fortress

The medieval Asen’s Fortress lies in the Rhodope mountain. The sight is just 2 km away from Asenovgrad, a town near Plovdiv. The fortress existed in Thracian times, it was reconstructed in the Byzantine period, as it guarded the Belomorski pass and the Byzantine border in the area. In old times the fortress owned its army, and also its administration. It was overtaken by the crusaders during their fourth crusade. Asen’s fortress existed in entirety until 1410, when the Ottoman army invaded the area and destroyed it.

The fortress bears the name of the Bulgarian tsar Ivan Asen the Second. He ordered a host of renovations in it in 1231. An inscription testifying to that still stands. The grounds of the fortress are an eminent sight. Asen’s Fortress welcomes with its historical grounds, throughout the year. That is a sight which belongs with the group of national historical sights of Bulgaria.
