Extend your stay in Europe by Exploring the Balkan Non-Schengen Countries

If you’ve fallen in love with Europe but keep watching the calendar tick down on your 90-day Schengen allowance, there’s good news. Тhe Balkans hide a cluster of nations where your Schengen clock simply doesn’t apply: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Albania, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Serbia, and Moldova.

You can keep exploring, slow travel a little longer, and experience some of Europe’s most authentic, least-crowded destinations without worrying about overstaying. Even better, the first six of these countries sit right next to each other, making them perfect for a single, unforgettable road trip.

What Is the Schengen Zone?

The Schengen Zone is a group of 29 European countries that have abolished passport checks at their shared borders, allowing free movement between them. For most non-EU visitors, including US, UK, Canadian, and Australian travelers, this comes with a catch: the 90/180 rule. You can only spend 90 days within any rolling 180-day period across the entire Schengen Zone combined, not per country.

Once those 90 days are over, you have to leave the Schengen area entirely or apply for a long-stay visa. This is where the Balkans’ non-Schengen countries come in.

Because they sit outside Schengen, time spent in these countries doesn’t count against your 90 days. So you can pause your Schengen clock, explore somewhere completely different, and still have days left for Italy, Greece, or Croatia afterward.

The Balkan Countries Outside the Schengen Zone

Seven Balkan countries currently sit outside the Schengen Zone: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Albania, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Serbia, and Moldova. The first six on the list are neighbouring countries, forming a natural loop through the western Balkans. That makes them ideal for a single overland itinerary, and it’s exactly the route behind our own 16-day Non-Schengen Tour.

Here’s a quick rundown of each country and how to enter it.

Note: Visa policies can change, so always double-check current requirements for your nationality before you travel.

🇧🇦 Bosnia and Herzegovina

Our Balkan tour is passing through the amazing Mostar in Bosnia and Herzegovina

A country of Ottoman bazaars, Austro-Hungarian facades, and a Sarajevo skyline where mosques, churches, a synagogue, and a cathedral all share the same view. Add the emerald waters of the Neretva River and the iconic Stari Most bridge in Mostar, and it’s easy to see why Bosnia rewards every extra day spent there.

Entry: Visa-free for up to 90 days within any 180 days for US, UK, EU, Canadian, and Australian passport holders. No advance application or fee, just a passport valid at least three months beyond your departure date.

🇲🇪 Montenegro

Fjord-like Bay of Kotor, medieval walled towns, and the dramatic Durmitor mountains make Montenegro one of the fastest-rising Adriatic Sea destinations. It’s compact enough to combine coast and mountains in just a few days.

Entry: Visa-free for up to 90 days within any 180 days for US, UK, EU, Canadian, and Australian citizens. EU nationals can even use a national ID card for stays of up to 30 days.

🇦🇱 Albania

Cobblestone street with shops in Gjirokaster, Albania, framed by lush hills.

From the Albanian Riviera’s beaches to the UNESCO towns of Berat and Gjirokastër, Albania has quickly become one of the region’s favorite discoveries.

Entry: Visa-free for up to 90 days for most nationalities, including EU and UK citizens. Under a bilateral agreement, US citizens get a full 365-day visa-free stay. That’s one of the most generous allowances anywhere in Europe.

🇽🇰 Kosovo

A photo of Prizren, showing the Sinan Pasha Mosque with its tall minaret against a backdrop of lush green hills.

Europe’s youngest country, Kosovo, is also one of its warmest. Pristina’s buzzing café culture and Prizren’s Ottoman old town make it a rewarding, still-uncrowded stop.

Entry: Visa-free for up to 90 days within any 180 days for US, UK, EU, Canadian, and Australian citizens.

🇲🇰 North Macedonia

Lake Ohrid, North Macedonia with a historic church on a cliff and boats floating on the calm water.

North Macedonia is home to Lake Ohrid, one of Europe’s oldest and deepest lakes, ringed by Byzantine churches, plus the vibrant capital Skopje and the dramatic Matka Canyon just outside it.

Entry: Visa-free for up to 90 days within any 180 days for US, UK, EU, Canadian, and Australian passport holders.

Belgrade is one of Europe’s great nightlife capitals, with its floating river clubs and centuries-old Kalemegdan fortress. At the same time, the rest of Serbia offers UNESCO monasteries and rolling wine country.

Entry: Visa-free for up to 90 days within any 180 days for US, UK, EU, Canadian, and Australian citizens. If staying in private accommodation rather than a hotel, you’re required to register with local police within 24 hours.

Why This Corner of Europe Is Worth the Detour

“People come to the Balkans expecting ruins and war stories, and they leave talking about the food, the mountains, and how kind everyone was to them. This region has some of the richest history and warmest hospitality in Europe. Most of these countries sit outside the Schengen Zone, so you can actually take your time here instead of racing the clock. That’s the trip I want people to have.” — Adriana, Founder of Private Guide Bulgaria
